Many people have the misconception that car buying is a task that should be feared or intimidating. In many families, it is the male figure that was responsible for such tasks, and now as someone who lost their husband you face this task. I am here you tell you that you have all the control in this transaction and most importantly knowledge is power.
When planning the purchase of your next vehicle you need to be aware of several important pieces of information. First and foremost you need to know what you want/need and if that fits within your financial constraints. My dad for instance always wanted my mom to have a large SUV (my mom is maybe 5’2) and now that my father has passed and my brother and I have grown up and moved away she lives alone with absolutely no need for that type of vehicle. You need to consider what the vehicle’s primary use will be, who will be your passengers and the frequency they will ride, and most importantly what will you be comfortable in (size, fuel consumption, and payment). Once you have determined the vehicle you need then it is time to consider your financial parameters. It is important to know your credit score and worthiness, how much cash you can put as a down payment and how much of a monthly payment works within your budget.
Once you have determined your vehicle of choice and your financial comforts it is the time to shop. When you are looking for the right dealership again knowledge is power. The internet will provide ratings from previous customer’s experiences, but the key is to go beyond the buying experience. It is critical to research the service department and customer care after the purchase. The total experience is crucial as an independent woman you want to know that you are doing business with a dealership that will not abandon you once the sale is final.
